Redbird Gymnasts Fall to Northern Illinois On the Road

DEKALB, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team fell to Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon, 192.175-192.050, despite a first place all-around finish from sophomore Sami King.
"There were some things we improved on in this meet especially the floor exercise," said head coach Bob Conkling. "You have to put out your best effort on all four events in every competition if the gymnasts want to have a successful season. This team is very talented, but they need to learn how to compete if they want to win. This will be our focus during practices the next couple of weeks."
The Redbirds performed strongly on the vault with a team score of 48.750 and on the floor exercise as well with a team score of 48.475. Junior Elise Gray led Illinois State in vault with a first place score of 9.825, followed by teammate Kim Genereux finishing second with a 9.775. The Illinois State gymnastics team improved tremendously on the floor exercise since their last competition. Kimberly Caron won the floor exercise with a 9.825. King tied for second place on the floor exercise with a 9.750.
Illinois State had three solid all-around scores. King won the all-around with a huge score of 39.050. She had a great meet at Northern Illinois, with her lowest score being a 9.725 on the vault. Followed by King was Genereux, who placed second in the all-around competition. Sarantakis also helped Illinois State by placing fourth overall.
The Redbirds are back in action vs. Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, Jan. 27, in Horton Field House at 2 p.m.
