Women's Golf Ready for Golfweek Challenge

Sept. 20, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will head to Wolcott, Colo., to compete in the Golfweek Challenge, its third tournament of the season. This is the first time the Redbirds have been invited to compete in the Golfweek Women's Conference Challenge hosted by Golfweek Magazine. The competition will be three days of play, beginning Monday, at the Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course.

Head Coach Darby Sligh is looking for her team to prove itself in this new setting.

"This is one of the best fields we will have the opportunity to compete against all year long," Sligh said. "It's time for us to rise to the occasion and claw our way towards the top. We have the experience in this line-up to do something really special and I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond."

The Redbirds will look for another stellar performance from senior Rachel Powers, who is averaging a score of 225 this season. Powers, who was named the MVC Golfer of the Week, led the Redbirds to a ninth-place finish at last week's Cardinal Cup, where she carded a three-round score of 223 (72-77-74).

Others competing for the Redbirds will be seniors Brianna Copper, Jordyn Wyzgowski and Carlee Cossell. Junior Hayley Guyton, having had an exceptional outing at the Redbird invitational, 221 (71-75-75), will round out the lineup.

Illinois State will compete against 17 other teams across all conferences, including Ball State, Boston College, Central Arkansas, Denver, East Tennessee State, Florida International, Harvard, Indiana, James Madison, Morehead State, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, San Jose State, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, UALR and UC Davis.
