Freshman Brianna Cooper Named MVC Golfer of the Week
Sept. 15, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State freshman Brianna Cooper took everyone by surprise at the Redbird Invitational over the weekend, and the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) league office recognized it by awarding her with the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honor.
"I couldn't be more proud of what Brianna has accomplished in her three short weeks here," head coach Darby Sligh said. "She has made the freshmen adaptation look easy and continues to gain confidence and momentum each practice. This is a great honor for her as such a young player, and I know there's more to come."
The Kincardine, Ontario, native fired a nine-over-par 222 (76-71-75) to take first place in the 69-player field at the Redbird Invitational, and lead the Redbirds to a first-place finish out of the 11 teams. The two-day, three-round tournament was Cooper's first competition as a Redbird.
"I feel honored to have this title," Cooper said. "I feel that I worked really hard over the summer to improve my game. But not until I have been here at Illinois State have I really seen a drastic improvement. This is thanks to my team and coach. I always feel like my teammates push me to do my best, and it has really paid off. Coach Sligh gave me so much support and confidence going into our home tournament. I can't even describe what I am feeling right now."
Cooper and the Redbird golfers will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to contend in the Hawkeye Classic, September 18-19. The tournament will be held at the Finkbine Golf Course.
