Current Endowments 2013 Honorees

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State women's golf senior Rachel Powers has been awarded the 2013-14 Helen Cushman Endowed Scholarship, as announced by head coach Darby Sligh Wednesday. The scholarship is awarded to a women's golf team member who has shown excellence through academics, golf expertise and dedication to the game.

Powers, a native of Quincy, Ill., is coming off a season in which she played a career-high 36 rounds. Powers' 79.2 season stroke average was the second-best on the squad, and she played an integral role in the Redbirds claiming the Missouri Valley Conference championship.

"This endowment was established to celebrate Helen's love of golf," Sligh said. "Each year, this award has been given to a student-athlete that embodies the greatest qualities that the game of golf promotes: patience, sportsmanship, and work ethic. Rachel is an athlete that takes all of these qualities to a new level, and I am honored to name her as this year's recipient. She continues to fight in the classroom and on the golf course to reach her full potential and she does so with grace and humility. Although she will be a senior this year, she will be one to promote this program for a lifetime to come."

Powers played some of her best golf towards the end of the season. Her 77 was the lowest final-round score of any golfer at the MVC Championship, as the Redbirds came from behind to claim their fifth title in the last six years. Then, in the Norman, Okla., NCAA Central Regional, Powers led the Redbirds with a three-round score of 225 (74-75-76).

Awarded since 1995, the Helen Cushman Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
