Jean Named to 2013 Valley Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS - For the third-consecutive year, Illinois State senior golfer Katie Jean was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league office Thursday.

Possessing a cumulative grade-point average of 3.91 in actuarial sciences, Jean was one of six players named to the first-team. Jean was the only unanimous selection, voted on by the league's golf sports information directors.

Jean's award follows a first-place finish at the 2013 MVC Championship, where she was the recipient of the Elite 18 Award for the third-consecutive season. The Elite 18 award is presented to the golfer who holds the highest grade-point average among the tournament's top-18 finishers.

Jean had a stellar senior season and led the Illinois State women's golf team in every tournament. She capped off the 2012-13 season by leading the Redbirds to a first-place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Illinois State's conference victory marked the 13th time the Redbirds have won a MVC Championship and the fifth championship in the last six seasons. With her second-consecutive individual championship, Jean became the sixth player in Valley history to win the award twice. For her performances on the course throughout the 2012-13 season, Jean was named the Valley Golfer of the Year.

Prior to the MVC Tournament, Jean also took home first place at the Redbird Invitational. Jean, who was named the Valley Golfer of the Week five times, had a scoring average of 76.6 through 33 rounds. The Rantoul, Ill., native carded a career-best score of 220 twice during the season and also had a low-round score of 70 twice.

The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore ath¬letic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the MVC Championship.

 

 

Jean and the Redbirds are representing the MVC in the NCAA Central Regional in Norman, Okla., May 9-11.
