April 30, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - After taking the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship title, the Illinois State women's golf team was placed into the NCAA Central Regional to compete against a field of 24 teams in the three-day, 54-hole tournament May 9-11. The regional tournament will be hosted by Oklahoma at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.

Illinois State's conference victory marked the 13th time the Redbirds have won a MVC Championship and the fifth championship in the last six seasons. Senior Katie Jean ended her dominant season in fitting fashion by finishing the three-round tournament atop the individual leaderboard with a score of 233 (77-74-82). With her second-consecutive individual championship, Jean became the sixth player in Valley history to win the award twice.

"We are really looking forward to competing at Jimmie Austin at OU," head golf coach Darby Slighsaid. "It's always an honor to represent the Missouri Valley Conference, and we plan on making the most of this opportunity. We must continue what we did last week by having everyone step up and help out. It will take this kind of effort to try and advance."

The MVC champion-lineup of Jean, Rachel Powers, Jordyn Wyzgowski, Hayley Guyton and Carlee Cossellwill represent ISU at the Central Regional.

The Redbirds will be competing against Arizona State, Butler, California-Davis, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Detroit-Mercy, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Indiana, Iowa State, Lamar, Michigan State, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Oklahoma, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, Texas-San Antonio, Texas Tech, Wake Forest, Washington and Wisconsin.

Illinois State will be the only team to represent the Missouri Valley Conference in the NCAA Regionals.

The individuals competing include Fanny Cnops (North Carolina-Greensboro), Lori Beth Adams (North Carolina-Wilmington), Emma Henrikson (San Diego State), Julia Roth (Central Arkansas), Paige Spiranic (San Diego State) and Chrstine Wong (San Diego State).
