Women's Golf Headed to NCAA Central Regional

INDIANAPOLIS - The Illinois State women's golf team will compete in the 2009 NCAA Division I Championship Central Regional Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9. ISU received an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship for the second-straight year after winning the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The regional is being hosted by Ohio State at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
"We are very excited to be a part of the Central Regional," said ISU head coach Darby Sligh. "The majority of the team has played the Scarlet Course before and they are looking forward to representing Illinois State on the national stage. This is a veteran group of outstanding young women and I couldn't be more proud of what they have accomplished together. "
There are 21 teams and three individual entrants in the 54-hole regional tournament. The remainder of the Central Regional field consists of UCLA, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Wake Forest, Louisville, Kent State, Michigan State Ohio State, Stanford, New Mexico, Georgia State, Notre Dame, North Carolina State, Washington, Kentucky, Chattanooga, Michigan, Murray State, Harvard and Fairleigh Dickinson. Kendall Dye (Oklahoma), Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho State) and Sara Wikstrom (Arkansas-Little Rock) will compete as individuals.
The 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship consists of 63 teams and nine individuals in three regionals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance to the championship round from each regional.
The Redbirds are led by three All-MVC Team selections in juniors Laura Harris, Stacey Miller and Marisa Milligan. Miller leads the Redbirds with a scoring average of 76.7 through 31 rounds. The Bloomington, Ill., native has also won three individual titles during the 2008-09 season, with the most recent coming at the 2009 State Farm MVC Championships.
Milligan holds a scoring average of 78.0 and has one top-five finish and one top-10 finish. The Normal, Ill., native's best finish of the season came at the 2009 State Farm MVC Championships, where she finished in third place. Harris has a scoring average of 78.5 in 31 rounds. Her best finish came at the Ross Resorts Invitational where she carded a 15-over-par 231 (81-73-77). Harris has three top-20 finishes, one top-10 finish and one top-5 finish during the 2008-09 season.
