SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - The Illinois State women's golf team prevailed in the final round of play to win the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday at the Club at Porto Cima in Sunrise Beach, Mo. ISU was led by senior Katie Jean, who earned individual medalist honors for the second-straight season.
The Redbirds sat in fifth place heading into the final round, but managed to outshoot Wichita State by 11 strokes in the third round. ISU finished the tournament with a team score of 977 (333-317-327), finishing ahead of Wichita State by a mere three strokes. Illinois State's victory marks the 13th time the Redbirds have won a MVC Championship and the fifth championship in the last six seasons.
Jean ended her dominant season in fitting fashion by finishing the three-round tournament atop of the individual leaderboard with a score of 233 (77-74-82). With the second-consecutive individual championship, Jean became the sixth player in Valley history to win the award twice.
After the match, Jean earned First Team All-Valley honors and was the recipient of the Elite 18 Award, which she also received for the second-straight year. It came as no surprise that Jean was also named the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Year.
