Women's Golf in Sixth Place after Round One at MVC Championship

April 21, 2013

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - The Illinois State women's golf team currently finds itself in sixth place after one round of play Sunday at the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The Redbirds currently hold a team score of 333, while Wichita State leads the field with a tally of 235 at the Club at Porto Cima.

Head women's golf coach Darby Sligh expects her team to have a lot of fight in them in the next round of play.

"We really backed ourselves into a corner, but I've not coached one Redbird in my six years here that didn't know how to fight their way out," Sligh said. "We must stay more composed Monday and quit pressing so hard, especially when the conditions toughen. We are certainly capable of coming back with a low round Monday, but we have to stay in the right frame of mind for the entire 18 holes."

Senior Katie Jean led the Redbirds in the first round, posting a five-over-par 77 to place herself in second place on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Hayley Guyton is three stokes behind Jean by adding an eight-over-par 80 for 13th place.

Junior Rachel Powers carded a 14-over-par 86, while juniors Carlee Cossell and Jordyn Wyzgowski finished the first round with an 18-over par performance of 90.

The second round of the tournament is scheduled to begin Monday with a 10:30 a.m. start.
