Women's Golf Selected to Finish Second at Valley Championship
ST. LOUIS - The Illinois State women's golf team has been picked to finish second at the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship in a pre-championship poll of league coaches, as announced by the league office Wednesday. Missouri State was selected to win the tournament
"It's always an honor to find your team near the top of any poll," head coach Darby Slighexplained. "We are excited to be in a position to go after the title this year. It will be a battle at the top, as many schools have the ability to put down low scores and be in the mix."
The Redbirds are entering the championship looking for their fifth victory in the last six appearances. Illinois State received a tally of 92 points in the poll. The Bears took first place with 94 points, edging out ISU by just two points. In the poll ISU had five votes for first place, while MSU had four.
Missouri State will look to build on a consistent trend in recent Valley history in which the pre-championship favorite has won the title. From 2003-10 (Bradley beat Illinois State in 2003 on the first hole of a sudden death playoff), seven-straight teams picked to win the MVC Women's Championship ended up winning the championship. 2011 broke the pattern, but Missouri State's victory last year (2012) equaled the ninth time in ten years that the favorite won the tournament.
Coming in at third and fourth place in the poll, Bradley and Southern Illinois received counts of 78 and 70, respectively. With 60 points, Wichita State rounds out the top-five selections.
The 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship will take place, April 21-23, in Sunrise Beach, Mo.
