Redbirds Struggle in Day One of Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, NC - The Illinois State women's golf team was led their senior captain Katie Jean Monday at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, NC. Jean shot a 7-over-par 151 (73-78) through the first two rounds to finish tied for 18th place on the individual leader board. ISU will begin the third and final round Tuesday sitting in 16th place after finishing with a team score of 633 (310-323).

Head coach Darby Sligh continues to stay optimistic about her team. "Although we struggled in that second round, we really accomplished some big things today in both ball striking and around the greens," Sligh explained. "We must recognize that there is a process to getting better and find a way to trust ourselves throughout that process. We have a big day day ahead of us tomorrow."

Junior Rachel Powers ended the day in the middle of the pack, as she shot an 15-over-par 159 (79-80), finishing tied for 62nd place on the individual leader board.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 162 (76-86), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 166 (82-84) and junior Carlee Cossell with a day one score of 166 (85-81).

The Redbirds will resume action Tuesday morning for the third and final round of the tournament.
