BLANCO, Texas - Junior Rachel Powers posted her best outing of the season by finishing tied for second at the Jim West Challenge with a 12-over-par performance 228 (76-72-80). She led the Illinois State women's golf team in the final round of play. Senior Katie Jean continued her dominant season by finishing in the top-10 for the sixth-consecutive tournament. Jean finished in fifth place with a 16-over-par performance 221 (79-75-78) at the 6,100-yard, par-72, Vaaler Creek Golf Club.

The Redbirds completed the two-day challenge in fifth place with a team score of 967 (331-308-328). Texas State won the event with a team score of 930 (304-317-309).

Head Coach Darby Sligh is proud of the way Powers and Jean competed.

"Another tough day of wind plagued us, but we can't expect to finish at the top making so many mistakes and huge numbers," Sligh explained. "We need to find a way to minimize those as the season progresses. I'm incredibly proud of the way Rachel and Katie fought and finished in this event. It was great to have two Redbirds in the hunt, as Rachel was so close to winning and Katie continues her streak of top-10 finishes. I know this finish leaves us hungry to compete next weekend in Miami."

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Carlee Cossell with a score of 257 (89-82-76), followed by sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 258 (96-79-84) and junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a three-round score of 268 (87-84-87).

The Redbirds will be back in action for its third event of the spring season Monday, February 25 at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge in Miami Lakes, Fla.
