Oct. 20, 2013
GREENWOOD, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team ended its fall season at the competitive Hoosier Fall Invitational Sunday with a team score of 919 (299-301-319), finishing in 14th place. The Redbirds were led by Rachel Powers, who finished the tournament tied for 20th place with a three-round score of 223 (72-76-75).
After a strong first two rounds, Illinois State struggled in the third round, as UC Davis won the invitational with a team score of 868 (296-288-284). In-state rival Illinois finished second (884), while Louisville took third (887). Illinois State bested Eastern Michigan (940) and Rutgers (947) in the tournament.
"We've had our ups and downs this season, but this might be one of our most disappointing efforts," head coach Darby Sligh said. "This is the same song and dance of getting into position and falling back. We will attack this pattern in the off season and come back more prepared. This team is so talented and is close to breaking through, but we must learn to execute down the stretch."
Hayley Guyton completed the two-day tournament in a tie for 49th place with a score of 231 (78-73-80), including a 2-over-par 73 in the second round. Jordyn Wyzgowski carded a 234 (74-80-80), while Brianna Cooper was a stroke behind with a 235 (75-76-84). Maggie Ambrose rounded out the Redbird lineup, finishing the three-round invitational with a 244 (82-76-86).
The Redbirds will have nearly four months off until the spring season gets underway on Feb. 17 at the Amelia Island Collegiate in Amelia Island, Fla.
