Miller Captures Individual Title at Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa. - Illinois State senior Stacey Miller finished the fall season with a win at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa Oct. 17-18, after carding a three-round score of 224 (77-73-74). The second round was suspended due to darkness Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Finkbine Golf Course and was completed Sunday (Oct. 18), along with the final round.
ISU finished in sixth place as a team, firing a 938 (313-314-311). The Redbirds entered the final day in eighth place, but due to Miller's first-place finish, improved two places.
"This was a tough team finish for us to end the fall season," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We did some great things, but in the end we just came up short."
Miller entered the second day in third place individually, but rallied to capture the individual title with an eight-over par. Raquel Hopton and Kaitlyn Wampler of Illinois ended the tournament two strokes behind Miller, to tie for second place.
"I'm very excited for Stacey and her victory this weekend," Sligh said. "She really stayed level headed in tough conditions and finished well."
Posting the second lowest score for the `Birds was senior Laura Harris who carded a four-over par 76 in the final round to finish in a tie for 19th place. Harris shot a three-round score of 236 (78-82-76). Illinois State senior Britt Knutson concluded the tournament one-stroke behind Harris with a 237 (78-80-79), to place in a tie for 25th individually.
Also competing were Illinois State seniors Marisa Milligan and Christine Larson. Milligan finished in a tie for 43rd place, firing a 242 (80-79-83). Larson improved five places, beginning the day in a tie for 63rd place and ending the day in a tie for 58th place. Larson shot a three-round score of 249 (80-87-82).
Illinois State sophomore Hannah Bachman played as an individual, posting a three round score of 260 (86-85-89) to tie for 70th place.
Missouri State earned the team title at the Hawkeye Invitational with a score of 914 (298-320-296). Illinois and Iowa State finished in second and third place respectively.
"We have a lot of positive things to take into the off-season in preparation for the spring," Sligh said.
The tournament completes the ISU women's golf fall season. The spring season will begin Jan. 30, 2010 when the `Birds travel to Venice, Fla. to complete at the Illinois Challenge at the Sarasota National Golf Club.
