Oct. 14, 2012
FLORENCE, Ind. -
With the winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour, senior Katie Jean continued her dominant season by finishing in the top-10 for the fifth-consecutive tournament. She led the Illinois State women's golf team in the final round of play Sunday in at the Hoosier Fall Invitational. Jean finished fifth in a 5-over-par performance 221 (73-71-77) at the 6,910-yard, par-71 Belterra Resort.
The Redbirds completed the two-day invitational in 10th place with a team score of 939 (314-305-320). Wisconsin won the tournament with a team score of 894.
Sophomore Hayley Guyton also contributed with a breakout performance. Guyton shot a three-round score of 226 (77-72-77), finishing tied for 13th place on the individual leaderboard. Sunday marks the best performance Guyton has tallied in her colligate career.
Head Coach Darby Sligh is proud of Jean and Guyton's execution.
"Today was a battle, and we came up short against some great competition," Sligh explained. "With the winds gusting, we had to fight all day long. Big numbers are still killing us, and we will look to conquer that this off season. I am incredibly proud of Katie for another top-five finish, and also for Hayley's top-15 finish. Both of them have worked extremely hard this summer and fall, and it's great to see that pay off, especially in a strong field like this one."
Rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Rachel Powers with a score of 243 (84-80-79), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 249 (80-82-87) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a three-round score of 268 (85-93-90). Junior Carlee Cossell, who competed as an individual, finished with a score of 263 (86-89-88).
The Redbirds will be back in action for its spring season opener Sunday, February 3 at the Illinois Challenge in Venice, Fla.
