Oct. 13, 2012
FLORENCE, Ind. -
Senior Katie Jean led the Illinois State women's golf team in two rounds of play Saturday in Florence, Ind., at the Hooiser Fall Invitational. Jean finished the day with an impressive even-par performance 144 (73-71) at the 6,910-yard, par-71 Belterra Resort. Jean is four-strokes behind the first-place finisher, Lindsay Danielson of Wisconsin. Jean is on pace for her fifth consecutive top-10 finish.
The Redbirds ended the day tied for ninth place with a team score of 619 (314-305). ISU is 39 strokes out of first place.
Sophomore Hayley Guyton also contributed a noteworthy performance. Guyton shot a two-round score of 149 (77-72), finishing tied for 13th place on the individual leaderboard. Guyton looks to continue her breakout performance in the final round of play.
Head Coach Darby Sligh wants her team to fight to the finish in tomorrow's final round.
"We did some things really well today but the areas we struggled cost us too many shots," Sligh explained. "Katie played extremely well today and Hayley (Guyton) did as well. I'm very proud of the way they finished today. We need to control our errors better tomorrow and fight to the finish."
Rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 162 (80-82), followed by junior Rachel Powers with a score of 164 (84-80) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a day one score of 178 (85-93). Carlee Cossell, who competed as an individual, finished with a score of 175 (86-89).
The Redbirds will resume action Sunday morning for the third and final round of the invitational.
