Powers Finishes in Top-Five at LPGA Xavier Invitational
Oct. 7, 2013
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Rachel Powers finished in the top-five for the first time this season, as she led the Illinois State women's golf team in the final round of play Monday at the LPGA Xavier Invitational despite heavy rains. Powers finished tied for fifth with a 6-over-par performance of 222 (74-75-73) at the par-72 LPGA International Golf Club.
Illinois finished the three-day invitational in eighth place with a team score of 929 (315-301-313). Senior Brianna Cooper and junior Hayley Guyton also finished in the top-20. Cooper carded a combined score of 227 (75-73-79), tying her for 13th place. Guyton scored a 231 (77-74-80), placing her in a tie for 20th on the individual leaderboard.
Coach Darby Sligh felt the course conditions presented her team with a challenge they were not quite prepared for.
"We played well all day and just couldn't seem to all hold it together," Sligh said. "Heavy coastal rain came in for our last 5 holes and derailed our momentum. We need to focus a little harder next time no matter the conditions. Rachel battled extremely well and earned a 5th place finish. I'm excited to see all of her hard work paying off. We have a little work left to do before our final fall event at Indiana."
Mercer finished in first place with a team score of 893. Daytona State and Morehead State both had combined team scores of 901, tying for second.
Illinois State will return to action for the final time this season Saturday, October 19, in Greenwood, Ind., at the Hoosier Fall Invitational.
