DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two of the LPGA Xavier Invitational with a team score of 616 (315-301), improving to seventh overall at the LPGA International Golf Club. Seniors Brianna Cooper and Rachel Powers, as well as junior Hayley Guyton led the Illinois State women's golf team with top-15 finishes in the second round Sunday.
Cooper finished the day with an impressive combined score of 148 (75-73), which tied her for sixth place, just six-strokes behind first. Powers carded a 149 (74-75), tying her for eighth place. In an impressive outing, Guyton carded a 151 (77-74), advancing her eight spots from Saturday, placing her in a tie for 13th.
Head coach Darby Sligh is pleased with the way her team has progressed and is optimistic heading into the final round of play.
"We had a great comeback Sunday with solid scores again from our upperclassmen core of Brianna, Hayley and Rachel," Sligh said. "Both Maggie [Ambrose] and Carlee [Cossell] responded to the challenge and came back with much better scores as well. Monday will be a big day for us to prove that we can back up a good round with an even better one. It will definitely take a low round to finish where we want to be."
Morehead State is in first with a team score of 596. Daytona State and Mercer both have combined team scores of 601, tying for second.
ISU looks to finish strong in the third and final round of play Monday, beginning at 7:45 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.
