Oct. 1, 2012

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Rachel Powers led the Illinois State women's golf team in two rounds of play Monday in Columbia, Mo., at the Johnnie Imes Invitational. Powers finished the day with an impressive 1-under-par performance 143 (69-74) at the 6,234-yard, par-72 Old Hawthorne Course. Powers is six-strokes behind the first-place finisher.

The Redbirds ended the day tied for ninth place with a team score of 608 (302-306). ISU is 27 strokes out of first place.

Head Coach Darby Sligh is pleased on how her team finished each round.

"Today (Monday) was a huge step in the right direction for us in many ways," Sligh explained. "Rachel and Katie (Jean) played extremely well all day and continue to lead us. We were able to finish strong in both of these rounds, which we've struggled with all semester. Although we aren't all pleased with our individual efforts, we have a lot to look forward to on Tuesday."

Senior Katie Jean also contributed another noteworthy performance. Jean shot a two-round score of 146 (73-73), finishing in 11th place on the individual leaderboard. Jean looks for a fourth-consecutive top-10 finish in the final round of play.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 158 (80-78), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 167 (86-81) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a day one score of 164 (80-84).

The Redbirds will resume action Tuesday morning for the third and final round of the invitational.
