Jean Finishes in Top Ten at Sunflower Invite

Sept. 25, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Katie Jean posted another noteworthy performance for the Illinois State women's golf team Tuesday at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, which was hosted by Kansas. Jean shot a three-round score of 231 (81-74-76), finishing in ninth place on the individual leaderboard. Jean has finished in the top-10 in all three of the tournaments she has competed in this season.

The Redbirds finished the tournament with a team score of 951 (321-309-321), placing in a three-way tie with New Mexico State and Middle Tennessee State for sixth place.

Head Coach Darby Sligh looks forward to executing better in the upcoming tournaments.

"I'd like to chalk up rounds like these to growing pains," Sligh explained. "I'm just waiting for the pain to subside. We once again did great work in the beginning of the round only to compound mistake later on. We are obviously disappointed with our performance on many levels and can only look forward to Mizzou next week. I'm hoping this event was our tipping point. This team knows they can do it, now we must execute."

Rachel Powers also had a solid outing, finishing with a 236 (75-76-85) through three rounds. Her performance marks the second time this season she has cracked the top 20, ending in 18th place.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 238 (80-77-81), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 246 (85-82-79) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a final score of 258 (90-82-86). Carlee Cossell, who competed as an individual, finished with a score of 265 (89-86-90).

The Redbirds will be back in action Monday, October 1, at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
