Powers Sits in Ninth after Day One of Sunflower Invite
Sept. 24, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. - - The Illinois State women's golf team was led by junior Rachel Powers Monday at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, hosted by Kansas. Powers shot a 7-over-par 151 (75-76) through the first two rounds. She is eight strokes behind the first place finisher after day one. ISU will begin the third and final round Tuesday sitting just above the middle of the pack in fifth place, after finishing with a team score of 630 (321-309).
Head coach Darby Sligh felt that the team needs to do a better job of finishing rounds.
"Although we had a few positive mental breakthroughs, we had an equally hard time finishing both of the rounds, losing a combined 25-plus shots in our final holes of both rounds," Sligh explained. "We must be diligent in our focus Tuesday in order to save what's left of this event. We are hitting too many good shots and getting nothing out of them. I'm proud of Rachel's solid play. We need more people to step up as our season continues."
Senior Katie Jean tallied another significant contribution to the Redbirds as she shot an 11-over-par 155 (81-74), finishing in 11th place on the individual leader-board.
Rounding out the Redbird lineup was sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 157 (80-77), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 167 (85-82) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a day one score of 172 (90-82). Carlee Cossell, who competed as an individual, finished with a score of 175 (89-86).
The Redbirds will resume action at 8 a.m., Tuesday with a shotgun start at Kansas' Alvamar Golf Course.
