Redbirds Fly to 4th Place at Wolverine Invitational
Sept. 14, 2008
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior Laura Harris shot a 3-over-par 74 to lead the Illinois State women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the one-day Wolverine Invitational, which was held at the University of Michigan Golf Course. The Redbirds finished with an 18-hole team total of 307. The tournament was reduced to an 18-hole tournament after heavy rainfall and unplayable course conditions cancelled Saturday's 36-holes.
Harris's score of 74 was good enough to place her in a tie for sixth-place. Senior Marci Hill finished in a tie for 18th place by firing a six-over-par 77. Juniors Stacey Miller and Britt Knutson, along with sophomore Terra Miller, all carded 7-over-par 78's.
Freshman Hannah Bachman rounded out the Redbird line-up by competing individually. Bachman finished by carding a 6-over-par 77, which was placed her in a five-way tie for 18th place.
Head coach Darby Sligh was proud of her team's performance, especially with the unfavorable weather conditions.
"Everybody, including our individual player broke a score of 80," said Sligh. "It was a great first tournament of the season, especially with the poor weather conditions. We did not do everything we wanted to do, but we were pleased with the outcome. We started stronger this season than we did last season, and that is something we can build on."
Michigan won the tournament championship, carding a team score of 293. Minnesota fired a 304 to take second place, while Eastern Michigan tallied a team score of 305, finishing third.
Illinois State finished ahead of fellow Missouri Valley Conference team Indiana State, which finished in a two-way tie for 10th place.
The Redbirds will travel west to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Alvamar Golf Course. The tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23.
