NORMAL, Ill. - Senior Katie Jean won the individual champion title, as she led the Illinois State women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Redbird Invitational with a team score of 930 (300-315-315). Jean finished the three-round tournament with a 1-over-par performance of 218 (70-75-73).
Head Coach Darby Sligh feels ISU will use the first tournament of the 2012-13 season as a learning experience.
"Although we came up short, I think we learned a lot in each round of this event," Sligh explained. "We need to be more patient with ourselves as we move forward this season. I love that these players continue to set the bar extremely high for this program, and I'm looking forward to watching them reach their goals. I'm so proud of KJ [Katie Jean] and her individual victory. As our senior captain, she has continued to lead us and her hard work has really paid off."
Rachel Powers also added a solid performance at the home tournament, finishing with a score of 232 (74-79-79), tying for 15th place, six strokes better than sophomore Hayley Guyton, who shot a score of 238 (79-80-79).
In her first collegiate competition, freshman Courtnee Cossell, who competed as an individual, ended the invitational with a final score of 247 (83-83-81).
