Redbirds End Day One of NCAA Central Regional

May 9, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. - After the first round of play at the NCAA Central Regional, the Illinois State women's golf team finished day one in a tie for 18th place, shooting a 13-over-par 301. ISU was led by junior Rachel Powers, who shot a 2-over-par 74 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club Thursday. ISU is currently in a tie for 18th place with Campbell.

"I am beyond proud of our effort," head coach Darby Sligh said. "The team fought to the end and stayed patient, which were the only things I asked them to do. We left a few shots out there that we will try and get back Friday. We have struggled all year with our first rounds so this is what I have been looking for in terms of being able to ride momentum into round two. Friday should be exciting."

Powers started strong with a 1-under-par (35) on the back nine to open the round and is tied for 48th place. Junior Jordyn Wyzgowski was a stroke behind Powers, firing a first-round score of 75 and is in tie for 64th place. Wyzgowski opened on the back nine, shooting a 3-over-par, but regrouped and shot par on the front nine.

Senior Katie Jean and sophomore Hayley Guyton both shot a 76 at the end of the first day, while junior Carlee Cossell rounded out the lineup, carding a score of 84.

Florida leads the field after the first day of competition with a team score of 282, but Oklahoma and Duke are close behind with team scores of 283 and 284, respectively.

The Redbirds look to close the two-stroke gap between ISU and Wake Forest, as the field of 24 teams will tee off Friday at 7:30 a.m. Illinois State will tee off between 8:25 a.m. and 9:09 a.m.
