TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Behind junior Katie Jean’s first-place effort, the Illinois State women’s golf team took second place in the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday. The Redbirds posted a team score of 913 (305-314-294), while tournament favorite Missouri State ended Illinois State’s run of four-consecutive championships and took home the title with a score of 910 (300-313-297), just a three-stroke advantage over ISU.

Jean finished the tournament with a four-over-par score of 220 (74-74-72), making her the 13th Redbird to secure individual medalist honors. She joins the elite group, which includes teammate Brianna Cooper, who placed first in the tournament last year.

Head women’s golf coach Darby Sligh was proud of her team’s effort.

“Even in team defeat, today was one of the proudest moments of my coaching career,” Sligh said. “This team was behind the eight ball, and fought hard to climb its way back to the top. I think today was a sneak peak of what is to come for this young squad. Congratulations to Katie for a hard fought individual title. It doesn't get any better watching someone's hard work pay off.  Also, congratulations to Hannah Bachmann on a solid final round as our senior captain. Her hard work kept us motivated the entire year. Finishing the year with such momentum is all we could hope for looking ahead to next year.”

In addition to Jean, Cooper finished in 12th place, after posting a 14-over-par 230 (76-80-74). Sophomore Rachel Powers carded a 16-over-par 232 (77-83-72) to finish in a tie for 18th. With a 19-over-par 235 (78-81-76), sophomore Jordyn Wyzgowski ended the tournament in 21st place. Bachmann completed the competition in a tie for 22nd place, after contributing a 20-over-par 236 (81-79-76).

Following play, Jean and Cooper were both named to the Valley’s All-Conference Team.

Additionally, Jean was the recipient of the Valley’s Elite-18 Award for the second consecutive year. This accolade is given to the athlete who holds the highest GPA among the field’s top-18 finishers. Jean currently holds a 4.0 GPA in actuarial science at Illinois State.
