TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Illinois State women’s golf team currently finds itself in a tie for third after one round of play Sunday at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The Redbirds currently hold a team score of 305, while Northern Iowa leads the field with a tally of 299 at the Country Club of Terre Haute.

Head women’s golf coach Darby Sligh is encouraged by her team’s effort.

“After a nervous start, we played extremely hard on the back nine to keep us in this championship,” Sligh said. “I could not have been more proud of the way we fought until the finish, and we will need to bring more of that to the table tomorrow to move up the leader board.”

Junior Katie Jean led the Redbirds in the first round, posting a two-over-par 74 to place herself in a tie for third. Sophomore Brianna Cooper added a four-over-par 76 to place herself in a tie for 11th. Fellow sophomore Rachel Powers carded a five-over-par 77 to put herself in a tie for 15th. Right behind her was sophomore Jordyn Wyzgowski, who is in a tie for 23rd after posting a six-over-par 78. Senior Hannah Bachman finished day one in a tie for 32nd after recording a nine-over-par 81.

The second round of the tournament is scheduled to begin Monday with a 10:30 a.m. start.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
