PEORIA, Ill. - Freshman Stacey Miller fired four-over-par (76) and led the Illinois State women's golf team in the first day of play at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Peoria, Ill., at WeaverRidge Golf Club.

Assistant coach Pina Gentile was pleased by how Miller was able to navigate the course.

"I was really impressed with how Stacey handled herself today," said Gentile. "She got off to a bit of a rocky start, but hung in there and turned it around on the back nine."

The Redbirds ended the day in fourth, as the team tallied a score of 317.

Gentile was satisfied with how the team ended the day.

"Overall, considering some of the circumstances I thought that everybody gave it their best shot," said Gentile. "If they got off to an early start, they did their best to maintain their play and come in with a respectable score."

Sophomore Tiffany Hockensmith fired a 78 and finished the day tied for 10th. Senior Hilary Anderson tallied just two more than her teammate (80) and tied for 21st, while freshman Laura Harris shot an 83 and tied for 32nd. Freshman Britt Knutson tied for 37th after shooting an 85 and sophomore Marci Hill tallied 86 and tied for 40th.

After the first day of competition, Southern Illinois finished in first (306), Missouri State sits second (309), and Bradley finished in third (316) just one shot ahead of ISU. Evansville (319) finished two shots behind the Redbirds for fifth, while Northern Iowa (325) finished in sixth. Rounding out the competition, Drake (327) finished seventh, Indiana State (332) eighth, Wichita State (335) ninth and Creighton (336) ended in 10th.

Gentile feels that with two more days of competition it is still any team's game.

"There is still a lot of golf to be played," said Gentile. "I look for us to have a stronger day going into tomorrow."

The teams will resume competition Monday at 9:15 a.m. where they will compete in 18 holes, followed by a third day of competition on Tuesday.
