Feb. 17, 2014

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate Invitational with a team score of 638, finishing the day 13th overall at the Amelia National Golf Club.

Despite the rough start, head coach Darby Sligh chose to focus on the positive aspects of her team's play and hopes that it can pull it together in time for the next round.

"Days like these are better used as learning moments," Sligh said. "That's exactly what we plan to do heading into the final round. We had bright spots that we can build off of despite the disappointment that we feel about the scores we put up Monday. We had a productive afternoon and plan to continue fighting even harder Tuesday."

Senior Rachel Powers led the team with a score of 156 (79-77). Powers shot two birdies in the second round, tying her for 46th overall.

Junior Hayley Guyton carded a two-round score of 160 (79-81), tying for 58th place, while Jordyn Wyzgowski shot an 162 (75-87), tying for 62nd place. Junior newcomer Lauren English tied for 65th place with a combined score of 164 (83-81), and rounding out the Redbird lineup was senior Brianna Cooper, who shot a 166 (82-84).

Florida International 559 (277-282) placed first with three of its golfers in the top-five on the leaderboard. Kennesaw State is 13 strokes behind in second with a score of 572 (290-282), 10 strokes ahead of third-place Jacksonville with a 589 (304-285).

ISU looks to climb the rankings in the third round of play Tuesday, beginning at 7 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, WSF gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
