Redbirds fall to Illinois at Illinois Challenge

Feb. 2, 2014

VENICE, Fla. - The Illinois State women's golf team opened the 2014 season with a loss to Illinois by a score of 9.5-2.5 at the Illinois Challenge on the par-72, 6,980-yard Venice Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., Sunday.

Despite the outcome, head coach Darby Sligh was pleased with her team's effort and has a positive outlook toward the rest of the season.

"This competition is great in that it showcases both our strengths and weaknesses early in the season," Sligh explained. "Illinois was just too strong for us to overcome in the end. We had strong play all day from Rachel and Jordyn, and I'm proud of the way Courtnee fought all the way to the end. We have a lot to work on, but also a lot of positives to take into the next few weeks of practice."

The match was constructed of four-ball partner matches in the morning followed by individual matches between the two teams in the afternoon.

Seniors Jordyn Wyzgowski and Rachel Powers were able to secure the Redbirds only point in the morning four-ball matches. While Powers was able to win her individual match and sophomore Courtnee Cossell halved her match for half of a point to make up the `Birds 2.5.

Senior Carlee Cossell and juniors Hayley Guyton and Lauren English, in her Illinois State debut, as well as sophomore Courtnee Cossell and freshmen Maggie Ambrose and Renee Solberg all fell in their respective matches.
