Smith Earns Fifth Valley Newcomer of the Week Honor

ST. LOUIS - Sophomore transfer Janae Smithwas named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the fifth time this season, as announced by the league office. Smith most recently earned the award on Dec. 17.

Smith recorded her second-straight double-double performance, as she led the Illinois State women's basketball team with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in its loss to Princeton (Dec. 19). She shot 41 percent from the field, making 7-of-17. In 38 minutes, Smith also dished out two assists and had a steal. In ISU's win over in-state rival Illinois (Dec. 21), Smith netted 13 points and brought down seven boards in the 69-68 victory. She was 5-of-11 from the field, handed out four assists and had a steal in 37 minutes.

The Matteson, Ill., native is the leading scorer for Illinois State, averaging 15.5 points per game with a 51 percent field goal percentage. Smith also leads the team with 8.8 rebounds per game and 10 blocks, averaging 32.7 minutes per game.

It marks the seventh weekly honor for the Redbirds. Jamie Russell and Candace Sykeshave both earned Valley Player of the Week honors this season. Sarah Nelson from Creighton was named the Valley Player of the Week for her performance at the Caribbean Classic.

Smith and the Redbirds will be back in action Sunday, as they travel to Indianapolis to take on Butler in their final nonconference game of the season. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CST).
