Smith Earns Fourth Valley Newcomer of the Week Honor

Dec. 17, 2012

ST. LOUIS - Sophomore transfer Janae Smith was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the fourth time this season, as announced by the league office Monday. Smith previously won the award three-straight weeks in a row.

"It's a real honor for Janae to be named Valley Newcomer of the Week again," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "She is very deserving of this honor, as she leads our team in scoring and rebounding and has become a very consistent player for us. She continues to work on parts of her game that she wants to improve on and that is the mark of a competitor."

Smith led all scorers against Ball State with 22 points, helping the Redbirds to a 71-56 victory Sunday. Smith was 9-of-11 from the field, making 82 percent of her shots, her highest single game percentage of the season. She led all rebounders with 11 boards, marking her second double-double performance of the season. In 33 minutes, the Matteson, Ill., native also dished out a career-high three assists.

Smith is the leading scorer for Illinois State, averaging 15.7 points per game with a 53-percent field-goal percentage through nine games. She also leads the team with 74 rebounds, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game. Smith has nine blocks on the season, averaging 31.7 points per game.

It marks the sixth weekly honor for the Redbirds. Jamie Russell and Candace Sykes have both earned Valley Player of the Week honors this season. Anna Munn from Indiana State was named the Valley Player of the Week for her performance against Tennessee-Martin.

Smith and the Redbirds will be back in action Wednesday as they host Princeton. The game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
