Illinois State opens its home schedule this weekend with games against in-state foes Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. The Redbirds host the Panthers Thursday at 7:05 p.m. and the Cougars Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
Illinois State looks to start the 2010-11 home schedule just as it has the last seven years - with a win. ISU has won seven-consecutive home openers coming into this year. ISU has been a tough team to beat in Redbird Arena of late, posting a 49-12 home record over the past four seasons, which includes a 21-4 mark against non-conference opponents.
The Redbird faithful are getting their first chance to see new head coach Stephanie Glance and her staff in action in the regular season. Coach Glance should receive a warm and raucous welcome to Redbird Arena, as the Redbirds averaged 2,506 fans at home last season.
Illinois State leads the all-time series with Eastern Illinois, 30-8. ISU won the first 10 meetings in the series, which began in 1973, and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups, including six-consecutive. The two teams played at least twice every season from 1983-1992 as members of the Gateway Conference, with the Redbirds posting a 15-7 record. The series began again in 2006 with a 101-72 Redbird victory. The Panthers have won consecutive games just once (1987-88).
ILLINOIS STATE 82 - EASTERN ILLINOIS 66 (12/22/09)
Illinois State scored 52 second-half points to pull away from Eastern Illinois and cruise to an 82-66 win on Dec. 22, 2009. The game was tied at 30 at the half, but the Redbirds went on a 26-6 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to take command. Maggie Krick scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in that run. Dominique Sims led Eastern Illinois with 19 points and Ta-Kenya Dixon added 11.
Illinois State won the first all-time meeting with SIU Edwardsville last season, 70-66. Illinois State shot 53 percent from the field in the game, but committed 23 turnovers. Maggie Krick scored a game-high 21 points, Nicolle Lewis recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Broadway scored 14 points, making four three-pointers. Ashley Bey led SIUE with 17 points and six steals. Illinois State shot 60 percent from both the field and three-point range to take a 45-37 halftime lead, but suffered through two scoring droughts in the second half to make it a one-point game late. Krick scored the final seven points of the game on a three-point play and four free throws in the final six seconds to secure the Redbird win.
HOME SWEET HOME
Illinois State is 26-13 all-time in home openers, winning its last seven-consecutive. ISU's last home-opening loss came against Butler in 2002, 59-57. ISU was 13-4 at home last season, winning 10 of its last 11 games at Redbird Arena.
REDBIRDS OPEN WITH WIN OVER FIGHTING ILLINI
Illinois State opened the 2010-11 season with a win over Illinois, marking the 19th season-opening win for the Redbirds in the last 41 years. Head coach Stephanie Glance won her first game at ISU, becoming just the third Redbird head coach to win her debut. The win over the Illini marked the first regular-season victory for ISU since 1996 and gave ISU wins in consecutive meetings for the first time since wins in 1982 and 1984. Illinois State has won three-straight games against Big Ten opponents.
