ST. LOUIS - Senior Jamie Russell and sophomore transfer Janae Smithwere named the Missouri Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. It is the seventh weekly Valley honor for Russell and the first for Smith.

"We are pleased that both Jamie and Janae are being recognized by the Valley so early in the season," head coach Stephanie Glancesaid. "Jamie's play in our first two games has been consistent and at a very high level. She had a career-high performance in several categories against Iowa and just missed a triple-double. Janae, after sitting out a year for transfer rules, has gotten back into the flow of the game quickly and is playing a big role in the post position. Both players are working very hard on their games and want to help the team be at its very best."

Russell set or tied a career high in five categories, including points, rebounds and steals and recorded the first double-double performance of her career in the Illinois State's women's basketball team's second round game against Iowa Sunday. Despite Russell's stellar performance, the Redbirds fell to the Hawkeyes, 74-64. In the game, Russell tied a career-high with 30 points in the contest, a feat she also accomplished last season against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 21, 2011). The Rock Falls, Ill., native also brought down 12 rebounds, including seven in the second half, and recorded eight steals, just missing a triple-double.

In ISU's win over Morehead State, Russell netted 20 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. The guard also dished out six assists and recorded three rebounds and three steals. After two games, the 2011-12 Valley Newcomer of the Year is averaging 25 points per game with 46 percent shooting from the field. She is perfect from the charity stripe (9-of-9), has 15 rebounds, eight assists and 11 steals.

Smith just missed a double-double in her second performance as a Redbird, as the forward poured in 17 points and brought down nine boards, including five on the offensive end, in ISU's loss at Iowa in the second round of the Preseason WNIT. Smith was 7-of-14 from the field in the game and recorded a block, steal and assist in 31 minutes, the second most minutes played by a Redbird. On Friday against Morehead State, Smith recorded seven points and six rebounds. She also added two blocks, two steals and one assist to her stat line in the 62-45 victory.

The forward is the second-leading scorer for ISU after two games. She is averaging 12 points per game and has brought down 15 boards, with six being offensive. Smith is leading the team with three blocks and is third on the team in steals with three.

Russell, Smith and the Redbirds will be back in action Sunday, Nov. 18, as they host Memphis at 5 p.m., in Redbird Arena in the third round consolation bracket of the 2012 Preseason WNIT.
