Women's Basketball Finalizes 2013-14 Schedule
Sep 4, 2013
ST. LOUIS - The Illinois State women's basketball team's 2013-14 schedule has been finalized with the addition of the Missouri Valley Conference schedule, as released Wednesday by the league office. The Redbirds will play 29 regular-season games, including 13 inside Redbird Arena.
"I'm excited about competing in the MVC," head coach Barb Smithsaid. "I have a lot of respect for both the talent and the coaching in this conference. I expect a battle every game, and we hope our strong non-conference schedule will prepare us for those challenges."
Seven of ISU's non-conference opponents made postseason appearances during the 2012-13 season, as DePaul, Tennessee-Martin, Princeton and Penn State qualified for the NCAA Tournament, while Florida and Fordham played in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Northern Kentucky rounded out the group and played in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).
ISU will host Northwest Missouri State in an exhibition game Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2:05 p.m., before playing two-straight road games to open the season at Northern Kentucky (Nov. 13) and DePaul (Nov. 18). The Redbirds will then return home to face Colorado State (Nov. 23).
Illinois State will then travel to the Bahamas to compete in the four team Junkanoo Jam (Nov 29-30). The Redbirds will compete against Florida (Nov. 29), before taking on the winner between Penn State and Oregon State on Nov. 30. ISU will return home to host Northern Illinois (Dec. 5) and Tennessee-Martin (Dec. 8), followed by three-straight road games at Fordham (Dec. 15), Princeton (Dec. 18) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Dec. 22). The Redbirds will complete the non-conference schedule with a home game against Denver (Dec. 30) at 7:05 p.m.
The 18-game Valley schedule will begin with a weekend of home games against Drake (Jan. 3) and Northern Iowa (Jan. 5). The Redbirds then hit the road for three games in just over a week at Indiana State (Jan. 12), Southern Illinois (Jan. 17) and Evansville (Jan 19). ISU will return to Redbird Arena to host Wichita State (Jan. 25) and Missouri State (Jan. 27), before visiting new-Valley member Loyola (Jan. 31) and Bradley (Feb. 2) to close out the first half of Valley play.
The second half of conference play starts with three-straight home games against Indiana State (Feb. 7), Evansville (Feb. 14) and Southern Illinois (Feb. 16), before traveling to Wichita State (Feb. 21) and Missouri State (Feb. 23). ISU closes out the regular-season home schedule against Bradley (Feb. 27) and Loyola (March 2). The Redbirds will be on the road to close out the conference slate at Northern Iowa (March 6) and Drake (March 8).
The 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament will be held in St. Charles, March 13-16.
