Women's Basketball Announces 2012-13 Schedule
Aug. 30, 2012
ST. LOUIS - The Illinois State women's basketball team's 2012-13 schedule has been finalized, as announced Thursday by the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds will play 30 regular season games, with at least 14 being played inside Redbird Arena, pending the possibility of additional home court bids during the Preseason WNIT Tournament.
"The 2012-13 schedule is challenging and exciting," said head coach Stephanie Glance. "Conference play will continue to be extremely competitive, so our tough non-conference schedule is essential for our preparation. We are excited to have at least 14 home games in Redbird Arena and look forward to playing in front of our wonderful fans, and as always, greatly appreciate their continued support."
Two of Illinois State's non-conference opponents made postseason appearances during the 2011-12 season, as Michigan and Princeton qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Michigan finished seventh in the Big Ten, while Princeton won The Ivy League, going undefeated in conference play.
ISU will start the season with the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 9, as the Redbirds host Morehead State in Bloomington, Ill., at the Shirk Center on Illinois Wesleyan's campus, due to the Illinois High School Association's (IHSA) state volleyball tournament that will be held in Redbird Arena. The annual invitation-only tournament opens the women's college basketball season and will be played Nov. 9-18, in a three-game guarantee championship format.
After the Preseason WNIT Tournament, ISU will travel to Chicago, Ill., to take on in-state rival Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 21), before traveling to Western Kentucky (Nov. 24). After a two-game road swing, Illinois State will be home for nearly a month, as the Redbirds will play five-straight games in Redbird Arena. ISU and Wisconsin-Milwaukee will face off on the hardwood on Nov. 29, before hosting Big Ten foes Michigan (Dec. 5) and Northwestern (Dec. 7). After a week-long break for final exams, the Redbirds will host Ball State (Dec. 16) and Princeton (Dec. 19).
Next, Illinois State will travel to Champaign, Ill., to face in-state rival Illinois (Dec. 21) and then to Indianapolis to play Butler (Dec. 30) in its final non-conference game of the season.
The 18-game MVC schedule will begin with a weekend of home games against Northern Iowa (Jan. 4) and in-state rival Bradley (Jan. 6). The Redbirds open their conference road games against Creighton (Jan. 11) and Drake (Jan. 13) before returning home to host Evansville (Jan. 17), Southern Illinois (Jan. 19) and Indiana State (Jan. 25). To close out the first half of Valley play, ISU will travel to Wichita State (Feb. 1) and Missouri State (Feb. 3).
The second half starts with a home weekend against Drake (Feb. 8) and Creighton (Feb. 10). The Redbirds then hit the road for three games in 10 days, including trips to Southern Illinois (Feb. 14), Evansville (Feb. 16) and Indiana State (Feb. 24). ISU closes out the regular-season home schedule with Wichita State (Feb. 28) and Missouri State (March 3) and will be on the road to close out the year at Bradley (March 7) and Northern Iowa (March 9).
