Nelson Receives Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship
Aug 21, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior guard Chloe Nelson has been named the recipient of the 2013 Rev. Dr. Joanne Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship, as announced Wednesday.
Head women's basketball coach Barb Smith believes Nelson is deserving of the award for her role in the Redbird program.
"Congratulations to Chloe for earning the Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship," Smith said. "We are extremely happy for her and proud of her accomplishment. Chloe is one of the hardest workers on this basketball team and is the ultimate team player. She has shown great leadership throughout the summer and this fall. She deserves this recognition."
Nelson was appreciative of the honor, especially one that is named after such an accomplished woman.
"Receiving this scholarship is certainly an honor," Nelson said. "Rev. Dr. Peppard-Cooke is such an inspiration to me and many other student-athletes, not only because of what she has accomplished throughout her life, but also her generosity. I am truly grateful for her gift to Redbird Athletics."
Nelson played in every game last season for ISU and started three games. The Florissant, Mo., native averaged 1.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Nelson dished out 46 assists, had eight blocks and 28 steals on the season.
Nelson, who earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honorable mention honors and was the Elite 18 Award winner, dished out a career-high five assists against Northern Iowa (Jan. 4) and tied a career-high in steals with three at Southern Illinois (Feb. 14). The guard scored a season-high eight points at Illinois (Dec. 21) in ISU's one-point victory.
The Peppard-Cooke Scholarship was established by Dr. Cooke in 2006. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide support for a member of the women's basketball team. "Pep" created this scholarship to express her support of education and athletics. As a recipient of a scholarship herself, "Pep" was aware of the difference such support can make in the life of a student. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team.
The Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
