Foley Receives Garrett Endowed Scholarship
Aug 13, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomore guard Alexis Foley has been named the recipient of the 2013 Robert and Laura Garrett Endowed Scholarship, as announced Tuesday.
Head women's basketball coach Barb Smith believes Foley is deserving of the award for her role in the Redbird program.
"We are so happy for Alexis Foley to be earning the Robert and Laura Garrett Endowment," Smith said. "She is one of the toughest, hard-nosed athletes I have ever coached. Her mental attitude is the key to her success on and off the court. She always represents Illinois State, the team and herself with class. "
Foley was appreciative of the honor, especially one that is named after loyal Redbird fans.
"I am honored to be chosen for the Garrett Endowed Scholarship," Foley said. "I feel blessed to have the opportunity to represent women's basketball here at Illinois State in such a prestigious way. I will continue to strive toward excellence in both academics and athletics."
Foley appeared in all 35 games and started 24 for the Redbirds during the 2012-13 season, averaging 19.2 minutes per game. The guard averaged 4.6 points per game and was 27-of-84 (.321) from beyond the three-point line, finished with the second best percentage and attempts on the team. Foley scored a career-high 13 points at Indiana State (Feb. 24), as she was perfect in all shooting categories, including going 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. Foley recorded three games with double-digit scoring efforts during her freshman campaign and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds at Southern Illinois (Feb. 14). The White Bear Lake, Minn., native dished out 42 assists and 26 steals during the 2012-13 season.
The Garrett Scholarship was established in 2008 by Robert and Laura Garrett. The scholarship is for women's basketball and volleyball, both long-time loves of both Bob and Laura. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team or a member of the volleyball team, alternating each year.
The Garrett Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
