NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State women's basketball head coach Stephanie Glance announced the hiring of Brenda Keene as the coordinator of basketball operations Thursday.
"Brenda brings an incredible amount of experience to our program as coordinator of basketball operations," Glance said. "After working with Bem (her nickname) for 15 years at NC State, I know her character and the integrity with which she lives her life and carries out her professional responsibilities. I am thrilled to have Bem join our Redbird Family!"
Keene is excited about the opportunity to join with Glance and the ISU family.
"My first thought when Coach Glance asked me to come to Illinois State and be a part of the staff was wow, and there was no question what my answer would be," Keene said. "Her vision, character, integrity and the way she runs her program are some of the things I want to be a part of. After working under head coach Kay Yow for many years, I feel that working under Coach Glance as a head coach will be very similar. Everyone made me feel right at home at Illinois State. I love Illinois State and the community, and I am looking forward to the experience."
Keene is no stranger to college athletics, working in the field for over 25 years. She has most recently worked as the Coordinator of Merchandise at the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation for the past two years. With the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation, Keene assisted in the set up and inventory of promotional apparel and promoted and sold Nike merchandise that focused on raising money for the cancer fund. She also assisted in fund raising activities, including the annual 4K golf event, 4K run at the Final Four and the North Carolina State Hoops for Hope Event.
Before working with the cancer fund, Keene worked at NC State as the Senior Director for Athletic Equipment for 28 years. Working with the Wolfpack, Keene had responsibilities that branched into operations, equipment, inventory, facilities and compliance, while directly working with the women's basketball team under legendary head coach Kay Yow during Yow's tenure at NC State. Keene also traveled with the women's basketball team and had administrative duties specific to the women's basketball program.
Her other responsibilities included coordinating the set-up and maintenance of equipment budgets, while coordinating and overseeing the Weisiger-Brown, Reynolds Coliseum, Dail Basketball and Dail Baseball/Tennis equipment rooms and their personnel. Keene was also responsible for all game and practice activities, including proper set-up of team locker rooms, while providing pre- and post-game needs as stipulated by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and NC State policies. She also supervised data entry, maintenance of records and generation of mandatory reports, while overseeing the equipment needs for eight teams at NC State, while working with the facilities staff to schedule practices, competitions and special events in NC State facilities.
While working at NC State, Keene also volunteered for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Final Four Convention for 22 years (1987-2009). Through her volunteer efforts and work at NC State, Keene was the recipient of the ACC Women's Basketball Distinguished Service Award and the NC State Employee of the Year Award for the athletic department.
Keene joins the women's basketball program, after Lindsay Weiss left to take an assistant coach position at Bradley.
