Winge Receives Garrett Endowed Scholarship

Aug. 7, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomore guard Katy Winge has been named the recipient of the 2012 Robert and Laura Garrett Endowed Scholarship, as announced Tuesday.

Head women's basketball coach Stephanie Glance believes Winge is deserving of the award for her role in the Redbird program.

"To be awarded the Garrett Endowed Scholarship is a real honor, and Katy is deserving of this award," Glance said. "Katy is a great asset to our team with a positive attitude on and off the court. She values hard work and has great character. Katy had a strong freshman season and made contributions to the women's basketball program."

Winge was appreciative of the honor, especially one that is named after loyal Redbird fans.

"I am honored to have been selected for this award, as I take my role as a student-athlete seriously," Winge said. "The recognition is greatly appreciated, and I will continue to do everything I can to be a positive reflection of our women's basketball program and to have a positive impact in our community."

Winge appeared in all 32 games for the Redbirds during the 2011-12 season, averaging 10.1 minutes per game and just under two points per game. The guard was 15-of-38 (.395) from beyond the three-point line, finishing with the fourth best percentage on the team. Winge made a career-high 10 points against Northern Iowa (Jan. 14), with a career-high four field goals on a career-high six attempts. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native brought down a career-high five rebounds against Arkansas State (Dec. 2) and dished out 16 assists and seven steals on the season.

The Garrett Scholarship was established in 2008 by Robert and Laura Garrett. The scholarship is for women's basketball and volleyball, both long-time loves of both Bob and Laura. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team or a member of the volleyball team, alternating each year.
