NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior Chloe Nelson has been named the recipient of the 2012 Rev. Dr. Joanne Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship, as announced Wednesday. It is the second endowed scholarship for Nelson, who received the Jill Hutchison Endowed Scholarship in June.
Head women's basketball coach Stephanie Glance believes Nelson is deserving of the award for her role in the Redbird program.
"To be awarded the Rev. Dr. Joanne Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship, after receiving the Jill Hutchinson Endowed Scholarship is a very special honor and speaks volumes about Chloe," Glance said. "Chloe is a class act, both on and off the court, and is well deserving of such an honor. She values hard work and has a great character. Chloe is a role model for all student-athletes at Illinois State, not just her teammates. She is a great example of what Illinois State women's basketball represents."
Nelson played in all 32 games for the Redbirds during the 2011-12 and started in 16 contests. She averaged 3.5 points per game, was third on the team in assists (57) and fourth in steals (27). Nelson scored a career-high 10 points against Arkansas State (Dec. 2) and Creighton (Feb. 17) and brought down a career-high seven rebounds in an overtime loss at Missouri State (Feb. 26) in a career-high 37 minutes. She also dished out four assists three times during the season, tying a career high. The Florissant, Mo., native was a member of the Leadership Team and was an All-Valley Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention selection.
The guard was appreciative of her second endowed scholarship for the 2012-13 school year.
"I will consider myself extremely blessed if at some point in my life I can say that I've accomplished even half of what Rev. Dr. Peppard-Cooke has accomplished," Nelson said. "She is undoubtedly an amazing woman, and I am both honored and humbled to receive an endowment named after her."
The Peppard-Cooke scholarship was established by Dr. Cooke in 2006. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide support for a member of the women's basketball team. "Pep" created this scholarship to express her support of education and athletics. As a recipient of a scholarship herself, "Pep" was aware of the difference such support can make in the life of a student. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team.
The Peppard-Cooke Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
