April 25, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - Jamie Russell's playing days as a Redbird may have come to a close, but Russell isn't ready to put the basketball down yet. The Rock Falls, Ill., native was selected by NetScouts Basketball to be a part of the all-star team that will represent the United States in a tournament in China from May 1-15.

The USA all-star team will compete against national teams from Australia, Brazil and China, and will be playing three round-robin games in three different cities. The team, which is made up of all-conference performers from across the country, will be coached by NetScouts Basketball's Chris Denker.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to represent not only myself and the United State, but also Illinois State with this chance to play over in China," Russell said. "I couldn't have done all of this without the support from my coaches, team and the university. I am very excited about this opportunity."

The all-star team will depart from the United States on April 29th and will arrive in China on May 1st. The first stop on the tour will be Xiamen, which is on the southeast China coast. The first three games will be played in Xiamen from May 3-5. From there, the team will head to Jiangxi Province and the city of Ganzhou for games May 7-9. The final stop on the trip will be Nanchang, also in the southeastern part of the country. The team will play its final three games May 11-13, before returning home on May 14th.

Russell, an All-Valley First Team member and a Valley Scholar-Athlete selection, started every game for the Redbirds during the 2012-13 season and was the team's leading scorer with 14.1 points per game. Through 35 games, she tallied double-digit performances in 25 games, including nine-straight games with a double-digit scoring effort. Besides leading ISU in points per game, the Rock Falls, Ill., native also led the Redbirds in steals (92), free throw percentage (.837) and ranked second on the team in assists (99).

Russell was named the MVC Player of the Week on Nov. 12, after netting 20 points against Morehead State (Nov. 9) and 30 points at Iowa (Nov. 11), tying a career-high. At Iowa, the senior just missed a triple double with 30 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight steals. On April 4-6, Russell also participated in the 2013 New Orleans Combine in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four, competing in three scouted games, individual filmed workouts and evaluations of skills.

The Missouri Valley Conference will be represented by three players on the 10-player roster. Joining Russell on the all-star team will be Northern Iowa's Jacqui Kalin and Evansville's Samantha Heck.
