Russell and Nelson Named to Valley Scholar-Athlete Teams

ST. LOUIS - Guards Jamie Russell and Chloe Nelsonearned All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honors Tuesday, as announced by the league office. Russell was named to the second team, while Nelson received honorable mention accolades. In all, 19 players were honored o¬n the scholar-athlete teams, while a total of 38 Valley student-athletes met the nomination criteria for scholar-athlete honors in 2013.

"It's a great honor for Jamie and Chloe to be recognized on the All-Scholar Teams for the Valley," head coach Stephanie Glancesaid. "Both Jamie and Chloe are great students, who have great character and always give their very best on the court and in the classroom."

Russell, a preseason All-Valley selection, has started every game for the Redbirds this season and is the team's leading scorer with 14.2 points per game. Through 30 games, she has poured in 425 points and tallied double-digit performances in 21 games, including nine-straight games with a double-digit scoring effort. Besides leading ISU in points per game, the Rock Falls, Ill., native also leads the Redbirds in steals (75), free throw percentage (.870) and ranks second on the team in assists (86).

Russell was named the MVC Player of the Week on Nov. 12, after netting 20 points against Morehead State (Nov. 9) and tied a career-high 30 points at Iowa (Nov. 11). At Iowa, the senior just missed a triple double with 30 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight steals. Russell grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Milwaukee (Nov. 29) and played 40 minutes against Creighton (Feb. 10), which was also a career-high. A member of the leadership team, Russell is in the top-10 in three categories in the Valley rankings, including points per game, field goal percentage and steals. Russell carries a 3.25 grade-point average (GPA) in sociology.



Nelson has played in every game this season for ISU and started three games. The Florissant, Mo., native averages 1.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Nelson has dished out 42 assists, which is the third most on the team, and has scored in 16 games. She has eight blocks and 25 steals on the season.

Nelson, who also earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore, dished out a career-high five assists against Northern Iowa (Jan. 4) and tied a career-high in steals with three at Southern Illinois (Feb. 14). The guard scored a season-high eight points at Illinois (Dec. 21) in ISU's one-point victory. A member of the leadership team, Nelson holds a 3.96 GPA in psychology.

The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75 percent of a team's games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
