Russell Earns Sixth Valley Newcomer of the Week Honor

Feb. 27, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - For the sixth time this season, junior transfer Jamie Russell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the week of Feb. 27, as announced by the league office Monday. Russell also received the honor on Nov. 28, Jan. 2, Jan. 16, Feb. 6 and Feb. 13.

Russell has played a crucial part for the Redbirds on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball during the 2011-12 season. On the season, Russell leads ISU in steals (70) and assists (96) and is the team's second-leading scorer with 13.1 points per game. Her performance over the weekend helped the Redbirds move into a tie for second place in the Valley.

"We are happy for Jamie to be named newcomer of the week once again," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "She has become a consistent player for us in every statistical category. At this point, I believe she is deserving of the Newcomer of the Year award in our league."

Through 16 Valley games, the junior guard leads the Redbirds in steals (45), assists (51), and is the second-leading scorer with 14.8 points per game and the second-leading rebounder with 6.1 boards per game. Russell is currently in the top-six in the Valley in steals and assists. In assists, she ranks sixth with 3.6 per game and is second in steals with 2.6 per game.

Russell has recorded double-digit performances in 15 of Illinois State's last 17 games and played a large part in both games for the Redbirds over the weekend. In Friday's win over Wichita State, 68-62, Russell netted 18 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field and was perfect from the line, sinking six free throws in 35 minutes of play. The Rock Falls, Ill., native scored 17 points in ISU's overtime loss to first place Missouri State, 80-76. Russell also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and tied a career-high six steals in 41 minutes.

Over the weekend, Russell tallied 35 points, averaging to 17.5 points per game, which led the team in scoring. She also led the team with six assists and eight steals over two games. She averaged five rebounds per game over the weekend and shot 52 percent from the field.

Russell is the second Redbird to receive the award, and marks the seventh honor for ISU. Freshman Maddie Oliver received the honor on Nov. 14. Drake's Rachael Hackbarth was named Player of the Week.

ISU will be back on the road this weekend for the final two games of the regular season, as they travel to Evansville Thursday before heading to Southern Illinois Saturday.
