ST. LOUIS - For the second-consecutive week and the fifth time this season, junior transfer Jamie Russell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the week of Feb. 13, as announced by the league office Monday. Russell also received the honor on Nov. 28, Jan. 2, Jan. 16 and Feb. 6.

Russell has played a crucial part for the Redbirds on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball during the 2011-12 season. On the season, Russell leads ISU in steals (53) and assists (85) and is the team's second-leading scorer with 12.1 points per game. Her performance over the weekend helped the Redbirds move into a three-way tie for first place in the Valley.

"We are pleased that Jamie has once again been recognized as Newcomer of the Week," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "Her play has been very consistent for us, and she continues to provide a spark for us in many statistical categories."

Through 12 Valley games, the junior guard leads the Redbirds in steals (28), assists (40), and is the second-leading scorer with 13.6 points per game and the second-leading rebounder with 6.3 boards per game. Russell is currently in the top-five in the Valley in steals and assists. In assists, she ranks fifth with 3.7 per game and is fourth in steals with 2.3 per game.

Russell just missed a double-double in ISU's win Friday over Northern Iowa, 84-68, making 17 points and bringing down eight rebounds in 30 minutes of play. She also recorded four steals and two blocks in the victory. Against Bradley, she netted 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, while dishing out six assists. Russell was perfect from the charity stripe, making 5-of-5.

Over the weekend, the Rock Falls, Ill., native made 28 points, averaging to 14 points per game. Russell also led the team with eight assists and five steals over two games. She averaged six rebounds per game over the weekend and shot 46 percent from the field.
