Feb. 11, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State Athletics, in conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), will present "Pink Zone" on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Saturday, when the first-place Redbird women's basketball team plays host to Missouri Valley Conference foe Wichita State at 4:05 p.m. The event is intended to help raise awareness about the fight against breast cancer.
The event is part of the WBCA's "Pink Zone" initiative, which currently includes more than 600 participating schools.
An invitation will be extended to cancer survivors (any type of cancer) to participate in a special on-court halftime presentation. Participants can meet on the Redbird Arena concourse behind section "G" with five minutes remaining in the first half.
The "Pink Zone" initiative will be on display throughout Redbird Arena during Saturday afternoon's game. Members of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority from ISU will be distributing free pink ribbons to all fans as they enter the arena. In addition, both the Illinois State women's basketball team and the Wichita State women's basketball team will be wearing pink apparel to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
On-court officials at the game will also use pink whistles. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
"We are very proud to be a part of the WBCA Pink Zone initiative for the second-straight year," said Illinois State Assistant Director of Marketing Mark Newton. "This is a great opportunity for the Illinois State Athletics Department to do its part in the fight against breast cancer. We are looking forward to a great event, and we hope to provide our fans with a very enjoyable and educational day at Redbird Arena."
The game is also being dubbed "Dollar Days." Tickets to the game will cost just $1, and $1 hot dogs, $1 pink lemonade and $1 pink Dippin' Dots will be for sale.
The following campus and community groups will be participating and providing informational displays: Community Cancer Center, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Colleges Against Cancer and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
Saturday also happens to be Reggie's Kids Day at Redbird Arena. Reggie's Kids Club members can stop by the Reggie Fun Zone before the game to get a free slice of pizza from Papa John's. Fun on the Run will also have an inflatable bouncer in the Fun Zone before the game. A private autograph session with the ISU women's basketball team for Kids Club members only will take place in the Redbird Room following the game.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death for women and the leading overall cause of cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 59. In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be newly diagnosed every three minutes.
