ISU Women's Basketball Returns Play 4Kay Game Sunday

Feb. 8, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - With three members of the Illinois State women's basketball coaching staff having worked directly with legendary North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow, ISU's team is personally connected with the fight against breast cancer. Yow lost her courageous battle on Jan. 24, 2009, but head coach Stephanie Glance and Illinois State Athletics will continue the fight with a Play4Kay game, to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Sunday, at 2 p.m., in Redbird Arena, when the Redbirds host Creighton.

The purpose of the event surrounding the game will be to raise awareness for breast cancer and other women's health issues. ISU's women's basketball team will be wearing pink jerseys and shoes for the game. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support of breast cancer awareness.

An invitation is also extended to all cancer survivors to participate in an on-court halftime recognition. Survivors interested in participating in the halftime recognition, will need to listen for first half instructions for the on-court recognition.

Besides the game, Redbird fans will see extra in-game activity during the annual Play4Kay game, as individuals will be on treadmills and stationary bikes at the north end of Redbird Arena. Beginning at the start of the game, treadmill walkers will have five minutes of game clock time to walk, jog or run to raise awareness for breast cancer, while raising money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. After five minutes, a new individual will step onto the treadmill, through halftime until the end of the game. New to the event for the 2012-13 season are individuals participating in a sprint triathlon. Two women will be completing a sprint triathlon during the Play4Kay game. The women will begin by swimming at the Illinois State University Student Fitness Center before heading back to Redbird Arena to run and bike on the treadmills and stationary bikes.

With the Play4Kay game quickly approaching, Redbird fans will have the opportunity to donate to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund online, or they can help raise money for the Fund by purchasing a raffle ticket for a chance to win three prize packages or by participating in a silent auction. Fans can make online donations anytime, while the raffle and silent auction will only be available at Sunday's game.

To coincide with the event, admission to the game will be $1, along with $1 hot dogs and pink lemonade. Pink Nike T-shirts will be sold for $30 and Pink Nike shorts will be available for $35 on the east arena concourse with all proceeds benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Before the game, visit the Kay Yow website at, and order tickets for this special event at, or through the Illinois State Athletics Ticket Office at (309) 438-8000.

Without the generous support of the Mennonite College of Nursing, Frontier Communications, The Pantagraph, Country Financial, Community Cancer Center and the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority as sponsors of this event, this would not be possible.
