Treadmill Walkers and Sprint Triathletes Ready for Play4Kay Game

Jan. 31, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - Besides the Missouri Valley Conference game between the Illinois State women's basketball team and Creighton on Feb. 10, Redbird fans will see extra in-game activity during the annual Play4Kay game, as individuals will be on treadmills and stationary bikes at the north end of Redbird Arena.

Beginning at the start of the game, treadmill walkers will have five minutes of game clock time to walk, jog or run to raise awareness for breast cancer, while raising money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. After five minutes, a new individual will step onto the treadmill, through halftime until the end of the game. Each walker is asked to get people to support the cause by making financial pledges. The treadmill walkers are in their third year of participation during the Play4Kay event.

New to the event for the 2012-13 season are individuals participating in a sprint triathlon. Two women will be completing a sprint triathlon during the Play4Kay game. The women will begin by swimming at the Illinois State University Student Fitness Center before heading back to Redbird Arena to run and bike on the treadmills and stationary bikes at the north end of the arena. Like the treadmill walkers, the women participating in the sprint triathlon are asked to get individuals to support the cause by making financial pledges.

As a 15-year assistant coach under Kay Yow at North Carolina State, Illinois State women's basketball head coach Stephanie Glanceis personally aware of the fight against breast cancer. Yow lost her courageous battle on Jan. 24, 2009, but Glance and Illinois State Athletics will continue the fight with a Play 4Kay game to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The purpose of the event is to raise money for women's cancer research, as well as promote awareness, while providing an event where cancer survivors can feel the support of the community and the Illinois state women's basketball team in their battle against cancer.
