Russell Leads Redbirds Past Northwestern

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State (5-3) women's basketball team defeated Big Ten opponent, Northwestern (6-2) 64-46 Friday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds were led by Jamie Russell who recorded her third double-double of the season, scoring 24-points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Katy Winge posted a career-high 12 points and marked a new career-high three-point field goals with four made. The Redbirds shot 35 percent from the field, compared to Northwestern's 28 percent. ISU grabbed 15 more rebounds than the Cats and had five-players post five-plus points.
Russell marked the first points on the board for the Redbirds with a jumper in the first minute of play. After the Wildcat's landed a basket from Alex Cohen, Alexis Foley hit a trey to put the `Birds up 5-2. Winge followed Foley's lead making a second-straight three-point basket for Illinois State, 8-2.
NU went scoreless for over two minutes, until Kendall Hackney made a jumper to put the Cats within four, 8-4. Northwestern earned the next four points, until Winge drained her second trey of the game to give ISU a 16-8 advantage. Winge stayed hot from the three-point range, making an additional three-point basket with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, 19-12.
The Wildcats were able to get within five points, but ISU held the lead heading into the break, 30-25. The Redbirds shot 27 percent from the field and grabbed two more rebounds than Northwestern. ISU was led by Winge with 12 points, all made from the three-point line. Russell added eight points and three rebounds in the first half.
Illinois State opened the second half with a layup from Maddie Oliver and back-to-back buckets from Russell, 36-27. Oliver and Russell continued to produce and combined for six of the Redbirds next nine points, 45-37.The Wildcats tallied six points, with two-consecutive three-point baskets from Lauren Douglas and Hackney to come within six-points of the Redbirds with just under than eight minutes remaining in the game.
The Redbirds compiled a 10-0 run with buckets from Russell, Oliver and Janae Smith to extend their lead 59-43. Northwestern struggled to find a rhythm late in the half and shot 0-10 on its last 10 attempts, until Douglas recorded layup for the Wildcat's first field goal in five minutes, 59,45. Candace Sykes sank a three with under 20-seconds remaining to seal with Redbird victory, 64-46.
ISU will return to the court Sunday, Dec. 16 to face Ball State at Redbird Arena. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
