NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State got a bit of revenge against the Kansas Thursday night, as the Redbirds (27-7, 16-2 MVC) defeated Kansas (17-16, 12-4 Big 12) by a score of 71-51 in the third round of the 2010 Postseason WNIT on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.

KU eliminated ISU from the WNIT last season in the semifinals in Lawrence, Kan., but the Redbirds defended their home court and picked up their first win against the Jayhawks in five tries. The win also snapped a 12-game losing streak to Big 12 teams and moved ISU into the WNIT quarterfinals for the second-straight year.

The Redbirds had five players finish in double figures, with Ashleen Bracey leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Katie Broadway and Maggie Krick each chipped in 14 points, Nicolle Lewis added 13 points and Shala Jackson rounded out the balanced scoring effort with 10 points in the victory for ISU.

The two teams traded baskets to a 7-7 tie at the 13:56 mark, before a layup by Lewis and jumper in the lane by Jackson gave the Redbirds a four-point lead at 11-7. After a bucket by Kansas' Aishah Sutherland made the score 11-9, the Redbirds ripped off a 12-0 run to widen the lead to 23-9 after a three-pointer by Bracey at the 7:54 mark.

Kansas finally put an end to the ISU run when Monica Engelman connected on two free throws after being fouled by Jackson to cut the lead to 23-11 and give the Jayhawks their first points in over five minutes of play. Two more free throws by Carolyn Davis cut the Redbird lead to 25-15 at the 5:55 mark, but the Redbirds finished the half on an 8-3 run to take a 33-18 lead at halftime.

Broadway nailed a three-pointer with just six seconds left to give her eight points at the half to lead all scorers. The Redbirds shot 58.3 percent from the field (14-for-24), including a 5-for-6 effort from three-point range, while holding Kansas to just 20 percent (6-for-30) and outscored the Jayhawks 10-4 in the paint.

Broadway started the second half just like she ended the first half, as she nailed a three-pointer 14 seconds in to give the Redbirds a 36-18 advantage. Kansas slowly chipped away at the lead and cut the deficit to 42-28 on a jumper by Kristen Boogaard, but Lewis answered with a jumper to bring the lead back to 16 points for the Redbirds soon after.

The Jayhawks came right back and answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 44-33 at the 14:24 mark on a three-pointer by Marisha Brown, but the Redbirds fired back with a 9-0 run to take a 20-point lead at 53-33 after Broadway connected on her fourth three-point basket of the game with 10:46 left to play. The Redbirds gradually extended the lead to 67-45 with just under four minutes to play on a jumper by Krick and a jumper by Bracey with just over a minute to play gave ISU its largest lead of the game at 71-47 before closing out the win over the Jayhawks.

Illinois State will face Illinois in the quarterfinals of the WNIT on Sunday, March 28, at 2:05 p.m. at Redbird Arena. The meeting will be the second of the season between the two teams, after the Redbirds were defeated by the Illini, 62-51, on November 24 at Redbird Arena.
