Broadway's Career Day Paces Redbirds To Win Over Bluejays

NORMAL, Ill. - Katie Broadway recorded the most memorable game of her Redbird career, as the senior guard set a new career-high 29 points and became the 27th women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in the Illinois State women's basketball team's win over Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton, 79-66, Sunday afternoon.
Joining Broadway in double figures was Marley Hall who netted 15 points, and Jamie Russell, who added 10. The Redbirds (10-8, 5-2 MVC) shot a season-high 54 percent from the field, compared to the Bluejays' (9-9, 3-4 MVC) 43.5 percent. ISU outrebounded Creighton, 35-32.
The two teams traded points for the first 10 minutes of the game until ISU went on an 11-2 run, capped off with a jumper by Broadway to give the Redbirds a six-point lead (21-15) with 9:22 left in the first. Creighton battled back and got within one, but Illinois State answered with a six-point run, clinging to a seven-point advantage (31-24) with four minutes left until the break.
In the final minute of play in the first half, Alison Seberger hit a three, and seconds later, a Redbird steal resulted in a jumper by Hall to give the Redbirds an 11-point lead (39-28) heading into the locker room.
At the half, Broadway led all scorers with 12 points, while Russell added eight. Illinois State outrebounded Creighton 16-11 in the first half, as Hall grabbed three for the Redbirds. Illinois State shot 57 percent from the field, while Creighton was held to 44 percent.
In the second half, the Redbirds picked up where they left off, gaining even more momentum as they went on a 13-3 run in the first four minutes jumping out to a 21-point lead (52-31) with 16:21 left in the game. In the run, ISU scored four straight baskets, including a shot from behind the arc by Candace Sykes.
With 6:20 left in the game, Creighton cut Illinois State's lead to 11 with back-to-back layups by the Bluejays' Carli Tritz (62-51). Creighton's comeback wasn't enough, as the Redbirds finished strong, holding on to their 13-point lead, 79-66.
The Redbirds will be back on the road, as they travel to Wichita, Kan., to take on Wichita State Friday at 7:05pm.
